Training in Glasgow

## We work across the whole city, not just the postcodes that are easy to reach

Glasgow is our home patch and the reason this practice exists. On any given week we are in tenement flats in Dennistoun and Govanhill, terraces in Shawlands and Battlefield, semis in Knightswood and Cardonald, and new-build blocks along the Clyde. The dogs are different in each of those homes, and so are the problems: a spaniel that screams in a first-floor flat with three neighbours sharing the stair is a different case from the same spaniel in a detached house with a garden, even though the behaviour looks identical on paper.

That is why the first session happens where the trouble is. If your dog reacts to other dogs on Great Western Road, we work on Great Western Road. If the barking starts when the close door bangs two floors down, we need to be in the flat to hear it. If recall falls apart in Queen's Park, Kelvingrove, Pollok Country Park or Victoria Park, that is where the plan gets tested. Not in a quiet hall where every dog looks trained.

Glasgow also has a particular density problem. Shared stairs, back courts, narrow pavements and busy junctions mean your dog rarely gets a choice about distance. Most reactive dogs in the city are not aggressive, they are trapped. Give a dog four metres of space and a way to disengage and the lunging often halves before we have taught anything at all. Building that space into a real Glasgow street, at rush hour, with bin lorries and buggies, is the skill we coach you through.

We are a service-area practice with no shop-front premises for clients to visit, which is deliberate: a training room in the city centre would teach your dog to behave in a training room. Sessions take place at your address or outdoors nearby, and remote 1-to-1 video coaching is available if you would rather start that way or you are working around shift patterns.

Response times to Glasgow

Glasgow enquiries are the fastest we handle because there is no long drive attached. We aim to reply to every enquiry within 24 hours, and city appointments can usually be offered inside the working week across Monday to Thursday 9am to 8:30pm, Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 5:30pm. Urgent cases, a bite, a dog on a formal warning, a dog that cannot be left alone at all. Are flagged and prioritised when you tell us in your first message.

Areas covered inside Glasgow: West End, Hyndland, Partick, Maryhill, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Battlefield, Mount Florida, Govanhill, Pollokshields, Govan, Cardonald, Knightswood, Merchant City, Springburn, Baillieston.

### Homes we work in here

- Tenement flats with shared closes, stairs and back courts where noise carries and neighbours are close
- tight closes and converted flats in the West End where hall space is tight and doorways are busy
- Terraces and semis in Shawlands, Knightswood and Cardonald with small gardens and fenceline barking
- New-build riverside apartments with lifts, corridors and communal doors your dog must pass daily
- Ex-council semis and cottage flats in Pollok, Springburn and Baillieston with direct street access
- Shared-entry buildings where deliveries, buzzers and bin days trigger the same reaction every time

### What Glasgow owners call us about

- Lunging and barking at dogs on narrow pavements and busy main roads
- Barking and howling when left alone in a flat with neighbours on the other side of the wall
- Puppies from city breeders and rescues needing safe socialisation in traffic and crowds
- Recall that disappears in Queen's Park, Kelvingrove and Pollok Country Park
- Pulling on the lead so hard that walks have been reduced to five minutes
- Growling over food, beds or handling in a small flat where there is nowhere to retreat
- Fear of fireworks, traffic and strangers in high-footfall streets
- Dogs involved in an incident where a written behaviour assessment is now needed

Why choose us in Glasgow

## Seventeen years of Glasgow dogs, including the cases other trainers hand on

John McGuigan has worked with dogs for over 17 years and holds the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Professional qualification. A private, assessed professional programme, and one of the few that requires demonstrated hands-on skill. Alongside client work he has taught seminars to trainers and rescue staff, and he is instructed as an expert witness in cases involving dog behaviour, which means the assessments used in Glasgow living rooms are the same standard that has been read in court.

Helen Hutcheson works alongside John on behaviour cases and owner coaching, which matters when a household has more than one handler and everyone needs the same plan. Our public record is 4.7 stars from 185 Google reviews, we carry public liability and professional care-of-custody insurance, and we do not use prong collars, e-collars, slip leads or check chains on any dog, in any postcode, at any point.

### City sessions without the travel drag

Glasgow is where we are based, so appointments here are the easiest slots we have and follow-ups can be booked close together while momentum is high.

### Tenement and close experience

We have run absence plans in flats where the trigger is a buzzer, a stair light or a neighbour's key. That context changes the plan, and we already know it.

### Court-standard assessment

The same structured assessment used in expert witness instructions is applied to ordinary cases. No guesswork labels, no blaming the owner.

### No fear, no pain, no startle

Our stated standard. No shock, prong, slip or check equipment, no rattle bottles, no lead jerks. Including with large, strong or reactive dogs.

### Insured and accountable

Public liability plus care-of-custody cover, and written plans you keep, so you always have a record of what was recommended and why.

### Honest triage before you pay

If your dog needs a vet, a different discipline or simply more physical outlets before behaviour work, we say so at the enquiry stage.

Local pressure points

## Glasgow's housing stock, weather and streets create predictable behaviour problems

A large share of Glasgow's homes are pre-1919 tenements and interwar flats. Solid stone walls carry impact noise beautifully: a door slamming three floors down lands in your dog's hearing like it happened in the hall. Dogs that appear to have separation anxiety are sometimes reacting to close traffic, footsteps, buzzers, deliveries, the stair light clicking. And the fix is different from a dog that panics at your absence. Getting that distinction right saves weeks.

Then there is the street layout. Victorian pavements were built for pedestrians, not for two dogs passing at two metres with parked cars either side. Reactive dogs in the city rarely get to choose distance, and a dog that cannot create space will use noise instead. Add tight junctions, bus stops, cyclists on shared paths and back-court gates that open onto other dogs, and you get rehearsal. Dozens of small, daily practices of the exact behaviour you want to stop.

Glasgow weather compounds it. Long, dark, wet winters shorten walks, and shorter walks mean less sniffing, less decompression and more frustration coming out at the window or on the lead. Firework season around Bonfire Night and New Year is intense in dense housing, where noise bounces between buildings. We plan for all of it: indoor enrichment that genuinely tires a dog, route choices that avoid pinch points, and sound work started well before November rather than during it.

### Conditions in Glasgow that shape the training plan

- Pre-1919 tenements: impact noise through stone and timber makes stair sounds a bigger trigger than the absence itself
- Shared closes and back courts: unplanned dog-to-dog meetings at zero distance, right at your own front door
- Narrow Victorian pavements: no room to create space, so barking becomes the dog's only option
- Dense traffic corridors such as Great Western Road, Paisley Road West and Dumbarton Road: constant startle noise during training
- Wet, dark winters: shortened walks and under-stimulated dogs, with frustration surfacing indoors
- Firework season in tight housing: sound bouncing between tenement blocks for weeks at a time
- High-footfall parks: off-lead dogs approaching yours before you can manage the situation
- Flat living with lifts and communal doors: forced close-quarters passing several times a day

How we work in Glasgow

## The same five-stage process for every dog, wherever you live

1. Step 1

    ### Enquiry and case screening

You tell us what is happening, where you live and what you have already tried. We aim to reply within 24 hours and tell you honestly whether behaviour work, training or a vet referral is the right first step.

2. Step 2

    ### Assessment in the place it happens

The first session takes place at your home or on the exact route, park or close where the behaviour shows up. Because that context is the information we need.

3. Step 3

    ### Written plan and diagnosis

You get a clear explanation of why your dog is behaving this way and a staged plan with the steps in order, so you are never guessing what to practise between sessions.

4. Step 4

    ### Coached practice and adjustment

We coach you through the handling in person or over video, then adjust the plan against what actually happens in the following days rather than sticking to a script.

5. Step 5

    ### Verification and handover

We test the behaviour under real distraction levels, confirm you can run the plan without us, and leave you with the maintenance routine plus ongoing support options.

Glasgow questions

## Straight answers for dog owners in Glasgow

### Do you cover the whole of Glasgow?

Yes. The full city, from the West End and Partick through to Dennistoun, Springburn, Baillieston, the Southside, Govan and Cardonald. We are a service-area business, so sessions happen at your home or outdoors nearby rather than at a training premises.

### How quickly can you get to me in Glasgow?

We aim to reply to every enquiry within 24 hours. Because Glasgow is our base, city appointments usually carry the shortest wait of any area we cover and can often be arranged within the same week, including evenings Monday to Thursday until 8:30pm.

### What does dog training in Glasgow cost?

Contact us for accurate pricing. We have options to suit every budget.

### Do you offer emergency or same-day appointments in Glasgow?

We are not an emergency service and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do is prioritise urgent cases, a bite, a formal warning, a legal deadline or a dog that cannot be left alone at all. So tell us in your first message and we will fit you in as early as our diary genuinely allows.

### Do you visit tenement flats and shared closes?

Constantly. Flats are where some of our most detailed work happens, because shared stairs, buzzers and neighbours change how absence and reactivity plans have to be built. We will also work in the close and back court itself if that is where the behaviour starts.

### Where do sessions take place in the city?

At your address for assessment and household work, then on the streets, parks and routes you actually use. Queen's Park, Kelvingrove, Pollok Country Park, Victoria Park, canal paths or simply your own pavement. Training that only works in a hall is not training.

### Do I need a vet referral for aggression or reactivity?

No. We take direct enquiries and we also work on vet referral. If anything in the history suggests pain or a medical driver, and with sudden-onset aggression it often does, we will tell you to see your vet alongside the behaviour work rather than instead of it.

### What equipment will you ask me to use?

A well-fitted harness, a normal lead and often a longer line for outdoor work. We do not use or recommend prong collars, electric or e-collars, slip leads, check chains or any startle-based method. That applies to every dog, including large and powerful breeds.

### Can you help if I work shifts or cannot manage a home visit?

Yes. Remote 1-to-1 video coaching covers assessment, planning and handling feedback, and it works particularly well for fearful dogs who find a stranger entering the flat difficult in the first place.

### Do you work with rescue dogs from Glasgow shelters?

Yes, and we have taught behaviour seminars to rescue and shelter teams. Newly adopted dogs get a decompression-first plan: nothing is asked of the dog in week one that we would not ask of a person who moved country overnight.
